Joromi’ by the pop artiste, Jaywon, is not only enjoying massive airplay but it is also on the playlist of a lot of Nigerians home and abroad. However, the name Joromi became popular through the hit song of Sir Victor Uwaifo in 1969.
Recently, the veteran musician came out to accuse two singers, Jaywon and Simi, of pirating his song without his permission.
In an exclusive chat with Jaywon, he admitted that he got the inspiration for his song through Sir Victor Uwaifo’s hit song, ‘Joromi,’ adding that he made efforts to contact the veteran singer officially but his attempt did not yield a result

.

He said, “There is no way I can talk about my hit song, Joromi, without talking about Sir Victor Uwaifo, who we all grew up listening to his music. The whole idea of the song is different from Sir Victor Uwaifo’s but the title reminds anyone of his song. I cannot take away the fact that his song inspired mine. I felt that I should tap into the current beat making rounds in Africa with the song. My song is a love song and I also saw it as an opportunity to promote my artiste, Twist da Fireman, who was also on the song. He added a different sound to the song. I am happy everyone loves the song. I keep working because it is difficult to know the song people would love, so I keep working till I get it right.
“The truth is that I actually wanted to write an official letter to Sir Victor Uwaifo about the issue but when I asked around, I was told that he was not in Lagos. It was just the title and they are not even pronounced the same way. I know what it means to tap into someone’s intellectual property. I would not be that stupid to take someone’s intellectual property without proper authorisation from the owner of the song. A lot of people do it but I cannot do such. The instrument I used in my song sounds nothing like what Sir Victor Uwaifo used in his.”
The singer seized the opportunity to apologise to Sir Victor Uwaifo, whom he said he regarded as a father asking him to understand. He mentioned that there were some artistes who had remixed his work without his permission but he chose to look the other way.
“The truth is that I am sorry if he feels that I used his song without his permission. He is our father and I cannot disrespect him. I would be so silly to think of disrespecting someone like Sir Victor Uwaifo, who has been inspiring us since we were kids. In all the interviews that I had granted, I had given him credit for the song but we are talking about the title of the song and not its content. Small Doctor just released a song titled ‘This Year’, am I going to fight him because of the title of the song? Dammy Krane released a song titled ‘Amin’ which is a different version of my song, ‘This Year; Tim Godfrey released a song titled, ‘This Year’, which is like a proper remix of my song. Dammy Krane and Tim Godfrey took about 60 per cent of my song to make theirs. In my own case, we are talking about the title of the song alone, in fact, the titles do not sound the same when you pronounce them. But like I said, I still have to give props to people that deserve it and there is no way I would talk about Joromi without remembering Sir Victor Uwaifo. The reason I did not give due credit to him is that the songs are not the same, they just have similar titles,” he said.

Earlier in the week, a lady simply identified as Eniola Omoshalewa Eunice, took to her Instagram handle to accuse popular actor, Yomi Fabiyi, of demanding s*x from her in order to get a movie role in one of his projects about nine years ago.
In a chat with Saturday Beats, the actor claimed that he didn’t know the woman. He further stressed that he would use her as a scapegoat for any other person who feels that they could ride on an actor’s name for cheap publicity.
He said, “I would be honest with you, I am aware of the s*x scandal story

but I doubt the lady exists. That person is not in the industry and I have never met her before in my life. My legal team is working on this issue and the case would be transferred to the proper law enforcement agents when they are through so that they can nip it in the bud. The Lagos State police command would soon receive the petition and I am sure once they get it, they would act on it. I am sure they would know how to apprehend the person and I would want to see who made such a malicious lie against me because I don’t know who this person is. I want to appeal to my fans to please be calm; I cannot do such a thing. I am not a perfect human being but the fact remains that I would not expect anyone to come forward with such a lie against me. For the record, I have never offered any lady s*x for roles. I would never do that. No one can come forward to say that she attended my audition and I offered her a role because she gave me s*x. It is natural for a woman to see me and like me and from there a relationship could blossom. We are all human beings.
“This woman, however, does not exist to me. There is no time this person ever contacted me privately to inform me of the allegation to make it look real. There is no way you would hurt someone like that and the person would not want to talk to you privately first, then your reaction to the issue would trigger her next move. Look at it, nine years after, I am being accused of a crime I did not commit. People abuse the social media a lot and we actors are normally their targets. When I did my investigation, I realised that this lady sells some items and she probably lied against me to drive traffic to her social media accounts. She should not have done it the dirty way because when you cook up stories about someone who strived to build up his reputation to this stage, there are always repercussions. Freedom of speech does not guarantee freedom from prosecution. When you make an allegation against someone maliciously, it could land you in trouble.”
The actor told Saturday Beats that the moment he saw the story, he knew it was a lie because he had not begun to produce movies nine years ago. He said, “The story she gave does not add up. There is no way someone would say she followed me to a movie location and she had agreed to sleep over then I would be so much in a hurry during that day to have s*x with her. If I go to a location during the day, it means I am going to work. Before I would be given a room, it would be in the night. She claimed she did not know me from anywhere but agreed to accompany me to a location and even spend the night. Why would I be in a hurry to make love to the person? Also, nine years ago, I had not begun to produce movies. There are so many discrepancies in her story.
“I just released a movie and it is currently trending and I have been getting positive feedbacks only for someone somewhere to think that they can spoil that happiness. Things like these are inevitable as actors but I never expected anyone to lie against me this way. I would have loved to ignore the accusation but sometimes one has to respond.”
