Former Minister of Foreign affairs, Ambassador Oluyemi Adeniji, has been confirmed dead, according to reports he died in London at the weekend at the age of 83. Announcing his death, the National President of the Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria(ARCAN) Amb. Dapo Fafowora, in a statement released yesterday, said the former diplomat, died on Sunday, November 26th.
“I have received with sadness, the news of the death of Amb. Olu Adeniji in London last Sunday. Amb. Adeniji was an iconic figure in the foreign service rising to the position of a permanent secretary and later foreign minister.”
Ambassador Adeniji was born on July 22nd 1934 in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. A career diplomat who began his sojourn in July 1960, Adeniji rose through the ranks in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was for five years, the Special Representative of the United Nations General Secretary with the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL). He served in Nigerian embassies in Washington, D.C., Freetown and Accra, Ghana. He retired from service in 1991 after serving as the Director-General of the Ministry of foreign affairs. For five years, he was the Nigerian Ambassador to France.
He was appointed Foreign Affairs Minister by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He served between July 2003 and June 2006, when he was moved to head the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The United States Government has donated seven vehicles and other tactical equipment to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
According to a statement on Wednesday by the US Consulate General in Lagos, the gesture was a continuation of the US government’s support for the counter-narcotics agency.
Presenting the items to the Director of Training and Manpower Development, NDLEA, Dr. Linus Opara, the US Consulate General, John Bray, emphasised the importance of law enforcement cooperation between the US and Nigeria in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.
“We are pleased to support the NDLEA in its efforts to fight drug trafficking. We share the same objective of ridding our societies of the harmful effects of narcotics trafficking and illicit drug use,” he said.
According to the statement, items and equipment donated to the NDLEA are three Honda Accord vehicles, three Toyota Hilux trucks, one Toyota Hiace van, one Smith Detection Body Scan Unit, 16 laptop computers and 16 Analyst Notebook Software.
Others are 20 digital cameras, five electric bill counters and 25 battery power supply backup.
Bray said the items were funded through the US Africa Command Counter-narcotics and Transnational Threats Programme.
The statement added that since the establishment of the NDLEA in 1990, the US Mission to Nigeria had collaborated with the agency and had increased US bilateral assistance for combating narcotics trafficking in Nigeria.
